The Ten Rules of Great residential architecture

The Critical Ten

1. the approach

2. The front door

The Approach: Known commonly as curb appeal. This is your home's first impression, and it is what greets you every time you arrive home. It should be welcoming, approachable and have an entry that is easy to find. Landscaping choices here can make or break.

2. The front door

2. The front door

The Front Door: It represents the gateway to the home you have created; it should be stunning and impressive but not over the top. It should be at least 42 inches wide and 7 ft tall (8' is better). This announces to your guests that they have arrived, be ready to be dazzled.

Note: this door was designed by  Designer: Michael Fullen Design Group

3. a space to pause

3. a space to pause

A Foyer provides an entry space. A way to design anticipation into your home reveal. The idea is to give people pause. It should be gracious, welcoming guests out of the weather and into the warmth of your home.

4. the staircase

Stairways: Any stairs that are required in a design are an opportunity to create art. There is nothing so naturally sculptural as a staircase. They come in every size and shape, so do not miss the opportunity to build that beauty into your home.

5. Natural Light

Natural Light: It is critical for your mental health and the psychological

warmth of your home. A good designer should be able to ascertain where the best places are to bring in the day.  Whether it be a view of the forest, the ocean, the beach, or a view to watch your kids play. One must be mindful not to glaze the south too much in hot climates or the west as it can get very hot there.

6. Lighting Design

6. Lighting Design

6. Lighting Design

Lighting Design: Nighttime provides a huge opportunity for a client to highlight their favorite art, decor and architectural features just the way they want. You have all the power of light in the evenings. Choose lighting locations, color rendering numbers, and bulb spread angles to your advantage. "Great lighting is not the presence of light but the strategic absence of light" - Eric.

7. Flow

6. Lighting Design

6. Lighting Design

A good home has a flow to it, no confusing maze for you or your guests to navigate. A best plan, when space is available, is to separate the public spaces from the private spaces in separate wings. Everyone has visited a house with a cluster of walls in the wrong places, and it was not enjoyable.  Strategic and thoughtful space planning through a remodel or new construction can transform a normal house into an architectural masterpiece.                  " We live in the floorplan"  - Eric

8. Windows have soul

Windows are the eyes of your home. They are a critical part of the design. Always choose the best your budget can afford. Placement, sizing and style, regardless of material, can truly transform your homes appeal. Both from the inside with strategic views and privacy concerns addressed and the from the outside, as a rhythmic art.

9. Inside-out relationship

Inside-Out: Blurring the separation between the inside and outside. Perception is reality and anywhere you design visual access to another space then becomes a part of the space that enjoys the view. It also enlarges an interior's perceived square footage in a positive way.

10. The Roof

The Roof: Is the hat of the home. It finishes off the design and either adds value or can detract from it. An interesting roof completes a good design. Whether a flat modern roof or a butterfly the roof needs to augment the design and be considerate weather patterns. A well-designed roof can even make a house famous as is found with grandfather's Butterfly design. Just like a good hat it tops off the fashion and adds a finishing touch. Take advantage of that!

In conclusion

If you are able to thoughtfully include these critical ten items into your new or remodeled home, you will be well on your way to great home design.
